Covid-19 impacts on mental health

May is ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’ and now more than ever there is a renewed emphasis on the state of mental health in Mississippi.

Licensed psychologist Dr. David Gavel with Southern Behavioral Medicine Associates says the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent social isolation recommendations have been especially tough for those with pre-existing mental health conditions.

As the crisis continues, the public at large is experiencing feelings of anxiety relating to economic stress, concern over loved ones, and what the future holds.

Dr. Gavel says one of the best ways to help your mental health right now is to keep as normal of a routine as possible. “Trying to do a variety of different things at home to keep structure, keep a schedule. Just like they were getting up and were going to be going into the office. I encourage folks to get up, do those daily morning routines, getting breakfast, getting dressed like you got somewhere to go, even though you’re not actually going anywhere. It’s good for the emotional state to do those things.”

If you need to use mental health services as always reach out to a mental health provider in your area. Additionally, the Mississippi Psychological Association website has many resources for the public to use.
