Rain puts damper on massive woods fire in Harrison County
Officials are saying it was the biggest fire Harrison County has seen in years.
After days of fighting the woods fire that began on Canal Road in Long Beach, fire crews are finally seeing some relief.
No one was injured during the fire and fire crews were able to save hundreds of homes and businesses from the flames, although one RV was destroyed.
This morning, officials say the fire is under control thanks to the heavy rainfall we received. The fire is not yet declared as out because there are still a few pockets in the woods that are smoking.
Harrison County is now under a burn ban for at least a week in order to get complete control of this situation.
Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan says it was a team effort to battle this massive fire, but Coast fire departments were well prepared for something like this. “The fire was very challenging, but our firefighters and our officers did a fantastic job in, I feel like, doing their job and their duties. It was very intense. There were times when it was very dangerous and firefighters lives were absolutely at risk, but they also are well trained. They know the risks. They know how to mitigate the risks. So, they were safe and no one was injured.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. You are urged to contact your local fire department if you have information on what or who could have caused this fire.
