Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Mississippi

The Institute for Disability Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus has partnered with Special Olympics Mississippi to host the Area Three Games in August.
The university is looking for volunteers to assist with nearly 100 athletes participating in the games. The Area Three Games will include soccer, softball, horse shoes and croquet. The event will be held August 8th on USM’s Gulf Park Campus.
Kati Gurley, recreation therapist at the USM Institute for Disability Studies, said, “We’re hoping to have between 80 and 100 athletes and we need a volunteer for each athlete. Pretty much the job duties would just be to hang out with the athlete all day, be next to them, making sure that they’re actually getting to the place that they need to be, making sure they’re being safe, having fun.”
They are still looking for athletes as well. Each athlete must have a physical and a release that can be found at Specialolympicsms.org. All who wish to volunteer can contact Kelsey Thompson at whoakels@yahoo.com.
