Sun Herald Releasing App for Tenth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

After Hurricane Katrina, countless stories of heartache, survival and triumph emerged from residents on the Coast. Our media partner, the Sun Herald, documented many of those stories. Now, as the tenth anniversary approaches, the Sun Herald is releasing an app with the stories and so much more.
Ten years ago, Mercedes Carranza owned a restaurant in Gulfport. That was before Hurricane Katrina washed it away. “I didn’t know what to do. So, for the next two weeks, I just kind of helped around in the community.”
After the hurricane, many Hispanics traveled to the Coast in search of jobs. Carranza took charge in bridging the gap between his Hispanic culture and his Gulfport community. “Some of them didn’t speak the language, so I would always direct them or say this is my business card, call me when you’re there, I’ll translate over the phone for you, if you’re buying insurance for your vehicle or if you’re getting a tag, I was able to help them out.”
Ten years ago, the Sun Herald documented Carranza’s inspiring tale of triumph along with countless others. Today, they released an app featuring Carranza’s story and more. Nine other Hurricane Katrina survivor stories will be on this app. You can also find pictures with interactive captions at the bottom.
Sun Herald Executive Director Stan Tiner said, “We’ve tried to be faithful to telling that story of what our people here have done with so much strength and grit and dignity. And we think the grit and dignity show through, and the heart of the Coast, show through very much in this app.”
Through Hurricane Katrina, the Sun Herald never missed a day of publication and their work on the storm received a Pulitzer Prize.
You can find the app on Google Play for $2.99.
Next month, on the ten year anniversary, the Sun Herald will also produce a 48 page publication with more content from Hurricane Katrina.
