New Life Disaster Relief Provides Aid to Disaster Areas

Ten years after Katrina ravaged the Coast, many disaster relief organizations are no longer in operation.
News 25’s Kristen Durand tells us about one organization providing aid on the Coast and how they’re helping other disaster stricken areas around the country.
Ken and Dawn Wetzel survived Hurricane Katrina and founded New Life Disaster Relief in an effort to provide aid to the fellow Gulf Coast families whose lives were nearly destroyed.
“I’ve been through several hurricanes, I’ve stayed through all of those prior, and I really did not expect to see what I saw and I think I was in shock like many people who lived here,” said Dawn Wetzel.
New Life Disaster Relief spent time bringing MRE’s, water, ice and other supplies to ravaged east Biloxi. Fast forward to now, and they are still in operation providing relief to the area in other ways.
Ken Wetzel said, “We do goods distributions, donation distributions in the community and we house volunteers. We house them, feed them and find work in the community for them.”
So, in the unfortunate case of another disaster, local and out of town volunteers will have one more place to stay, while helping the Gulf Coast regroup. New Life Disaster Relief makes an effort to respond to at least two disasters a year.
New Life Disaster Relief relies entirely on donations to provide aid. If you’d like to help out or find out more information you can visit newlifedisasterrelief.org.
