Southern Miss enters 2020 with two aces: Powell, Shepard headline rotation
The Southern Miss baseball team is faced with one of those good problems to have.
The problem is trying to figure out who gets the ball as the Friday night starter, the good part is having an embarrassment of riches.
Two aces, one mound, as both Walker Powell and Gabe Shepard are more than deserving of the game one start on February 14th.
It would certainly be familiar territory for Powell who led all of Conference USA in ERA last year and comes into the new campaign as a pre-season All-Conference selection.
Shepard was a snub from that All-Conference team, but the true sophomore has truly electrifying stuff from the right side.
He burst onto the scene in last year’s C-USA Tournament, striking out 12 over seven-and-a-third no hit innings. “Yes sir, we’re ready. We’ve always been ready. Me and Walker are close. Whoever is in what situation, it really doesn’t matter to us. We just want to go out there and do the best for our team.”
Powell said, “Can’t deny, the guy could be a first-round talent. So whether I get the nod on Friday or if he gets the nod, it all just depends on winning. Especially being my fifth year here, that’s more important to me now.”
Southern Miss and Murray State will lead off the 2020 campaign at 4 p.m. next Friday from Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg.
