George County Football: Matt Caldwell no longer Rebels head man

For one reason or another, the high school football coaching carousel has been more active than usual during the offseason.

Add George County’s Matt Caldwell to the list of Coast names, either moving up or moving on, or in this case: both.

As of Monday, Caldwell is now the director of athletics and operations for the George County School District, capping off his four-year run as head man of the Rebels and 24th overall as a coach.

Ironically, he’ll be the one accepting resumes for his old position which he says he hopes to fill sooner rather than later.

Caldwell declined to do a phone interview, but does offer this quote to News 25: “I love football and I still love football, but there comes a time when you have to make decisions about your future and I just thought at this time in my career, it was the best thing to do for me and my family.”

Caldwell posted an overall mark of 20-28 during his time in Lucedale, leading his Rebels to a pair of playoff appearances, including this year’s first round loss to Gulfport.

George County is now the seventh Coast team that will start the 2020 season with a new head coach.
