Southern Miss ends season on three game skid
For a team that had a shot at a Conference USA championship into late November, Southern Miss certainly didn’t play like it down the stretch, ‘exhibit A’ being Saturday’s Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
The Golden Eagles got off to a roaring 13-0 start by virtue of two touchdowns on their first two drives. But then came the ‘exhibit A’ part, surrendering 30 unanswered points to Tulane to close out their time in Fort Worth.
Only one lead change in a loss that puts USM on a three game losing streak to close out an otherwise promising season, the program’s first such skid since 2016.
Injuries to running back DeMichael Harris and quarterback Jack Abraham certainly didn’t help. Southern Miss Head Coach Jay Hopson said, “I thought we played hard. I did think we competed until the very end, so I’m always proud of that. And starting off I thought we were executing pretty well on both sides of the ball. We started off big up 13-0, and I just thought we had opportunities with the way we were playing to really have an explosive first quarter. But again, certainly football is a game of attrition. You have injuries, certainly we’ve had quite a few since Western Kentucky to this game. But you always hate it, but it’s just part of the game.”
USM finishes with an overall record of 7-6 and will open up the 2020 season against South Alabama on September 5th.
