Columbine survivor shares his story with Gulfport High School
Craig Scott, a survivor of the Columbine school shooting, uses his tragedy to start a chain reaction of kindness in honor of his sister.
Scott was at Gulfport High School today and shared his story.
Twenty-three years ago, on April 20th, 1999, two teens shot and killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 others at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
Fast forward to 2022 and Craig Scott is now a national speaker who shares his experience on what it was like surviving the Columbine High School shooting.
Not only did he witness his classmates being murdered on his right and on his left while hiding under a table in the library, but his own sister’s life was the first taken, right outside of the school. “Here to share my story of going from a broken place, to becoming whole again and the biggest message that I have for kids today is about their self-value and Columbine, the biggest thing that it taught me was the value of our lives and the intrinsic value that we have built into who we are.”
Craig not only uses the assembly to share his personal experience on what it was like surviving the Columbine shooting, but he also challenges his audience to start a chain reaction of kindness.
His sister, Rachel, was known for her faith and her detailed journal which now has a bullet hole through it, Craig uses to help others realize their lives have purpose. One of those purposes is to be kind to all. Chemistry teacher Tanya Rae Adams said, “Rachel’s challenge spoke a huge message, I mean even to us adults, you know there is, no matter what age you are, you can be going through something negative and we can always look for the positive. Rachel’s story was all about a positive message and how to be good to others and if we just have acts of kindness that that one minute, that very one minute, can change a person’s whole life.”
Craig Scott will be spreading his message of kindness and striving to improve mental health along the Gulf Coast for the next three weeks.
