55th anniversary of Medgar Evers’ death

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is honoring the legacy of Civil Rights leader Medgar Evers today.

It’s been 55 years since he was assassinated outside his home in Jackson. Evers was a World War II veteran who served as the very first NAACP field secretary in the Magnolia State. He led voter registration drives and boycotts to push for racial equality.

Today, several churches across the state rang their bells 55 times at noon in remembrance of Evers.
