403rd Wing holds changing of command ceremony
Airmen gathered to commemorate a change of command for the 403rd Wing at Keesler Air Force Base.
In observance of a deeply-rooted military tradition, the change of command was symbolized by the passage of the unit’s banner from outgoing commander Col. Stuart Rubio to the incoming commander, Col. John Benson.
The ceremony was presided by Brigadier General Melissa Colburn.
She commands the 22nd Air Force from Dobbins Air Reserve Base, where outgoing commander Col. Rubio will serve as director of operations, plans, and requirements.
It was an emotional event for Col. Rubio, who spent seven years as a Gulf Coast resident.
“We had a lot of challenges that we overcame in the 403d wing. We have a lot of different missions that we do. We do combat airlift , weather reconnaissance of course, air medical evacuation, and a lot of other support missions,” said Col. Rubio. “So the time was full of challenges, and overcoming some of the things we overcome as a team in the 403d wing – but also felt the support of the community. It’s a great place to be a military member, because you really feel the love of the local community.”
Incoming commander Col. Benson says he loves the community as Keesler Air Force Base and looks forward to assuming command.
Col. Benson described his command duties as fighting for resources, developing leaders, and ensuring war fighters are ready to answer the nation’s calling.
“I love the energy here. I love the location. The airmen are the most selfless airmen I’ve seen. Already, in just my short time here – They are ready to serve, and they are answering the call every day,” said Col. Benson. “The community that has built around tactical airlift is by far the most family-driven, the most selfless that I’ve seen in my career, and I’m blessed to be able to lead these war fighters.”
