4,000 Students Enjoy Education Day at MGM Park

Today about 4,000 students from all over the Coast took it from the classroom to the stadium, getting the chance to learn the Shuckers way. News 25’s Kristen Durand shows us what Education Day at MGM Park was all about.
Thousands of mini-Shuckers fans from schools all across South Mississippi flooded the stands at MGM Park. North Bay Elementary third grader Laithan Stroud said, “Today is Education Day. We’re watching them play the game and coloring and drawing and having fun.” Bayou View Elementary sixth grader Caiden Rosetti said, “Just learning how to play baseball and coming out here to have fun.”
Students from more than 30 schools from Picayune to Pascagoula took it beyond the classroom, from books and chalkboards to baseballs and scoreboards and getting hands on lessons where they learned the fundamentals of the game. Bayou View Middle School sixth grader Brennan Herbert said, “How it’s played and what they do, just a fun experience.”
They also learned the importance of being a team player. “There’s two teams and at the end they shake hands and that shows good sportsmanship,” said Laithan Stroud.
It was also a good opportunity for the kids to get involved and learn about our community. The Biloxi Fire Department and the Biloxi Police Department, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, the DMR and the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies all had booths set up for a little extra playing time. Director of Community Relations for the Biloxi Shuckers Cristina Coca said, “We just wanted to make sure the kids have an opportunity to get outside the classroom and learn and what better way to do it with a morning out and watching Shuckers baseball.”
