39 of 123 Puppy Mill Dogs Adopted from Humane Society

They had a rough start in life, but on Friday, more than 100 dogs rescued from a north Mississippi puppy mill got a new lease on life. Nearly one third of those dogs have new homes after the Humane Society of South Mississippi (H.S.S.M.) stepped in, fostered them, and handed them over to their new families.

Krystyna Schmitt, Marketing Specialist for H.S.S.M., says, “We have had a great turn out this morning to adopt these animals. We have probably at this point over 100 people waiting, and we have 54 animals available, and so we’re hoping we can not only find these all of these guys homes, but some of the animals in the shelter homes as well today. We have 54 available of the 123 that were rescued. We did have 30 that went to the Atlanta Humane Society for adoption, and we had a large number that had to go into foster homes for medical issues and because they were pregnant.”

Daniel Taylor, a puppy adopter, says, “I just thought, I’ve been thinking about it for a while. I think it’s a good time. I looked at some of the dogs they have available and I think today is the day.”

Kristen Dedeaux, another puppy adopter, says, “My sons have been asking me for a dog for about two years and I just felt like since these puppies needed a home more than anybody would that they would be a good fit for the boys.”

Emmitt Osborn, another puppy adopter, says, “You know, it just breaks your heart when you think of all the turmoil and all the hardships they’ve had. You just want to give a good home to them.”

Schmitt closes, “This is another great example of why people should make adoption their first option when adding a pet to their family. You never know where that puppy that you’re buying from the flea market or online or a pet store is coming from. So we want to make sure we put a stop to this crime of greed and make sure that all of our homeless pets find families.”

Thirty nine of the dogs rescued from the north Mississippi puppy mills were adopted Friday.
