37th Annual Salute to the Military

Being in the military has never been an easy task. In fact, it can be very discouraging. News 25’s Shelby Graham attended the 37th annual Salute to the Military which was a night to not only reflect on what our military has done but to also encourage them to press on.
Twelve hundred people packed the Mississippi Coast Coliseum today. Supporters gathered today to encourage the men and women who serve our country at the 37th annual Salute to the Military. “We have young soldiers that attend and this might be a first exposure to such a formal event with so many high level commanders. It’s really interesting to watch them appreciate and see our recognition for service. And then the veterans that have been with us for a while, it’s just an honor to have them in our presence and really be able to thank them,” said Kimberly Nastasi with the Mississippi Coast Chamber of Commerce.
Before the event began, art work and artifacts of militaries past were on display. Artist Gary D. Harrington wants the younger generation of military to see what their history is all about. “Well, it can inspire to be a part of the military. It can also inspire history, the study of history, that’s what I’m really trying to get across.”
The job of a Marine doesn’t come easy and sometimes it can be discouraging. Marine John Teale tells News 25 it’s events like this that keep him pressing forward. “We do our job, we don’t care. It’s gonna get done. I don’t care if you don’t like me or if you do like me, we’re gonna do it. It’s our job but knowing that people support it makes it easier during the tough times of the job.”
