2nd annual Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational makes its way back to south Mississippi
The 2nd annual Fallen Oak invitational is set to return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast from October 18-21st. Many of the nation’s top golf programs will compete, including Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, LSU, Georgia, and many others.
WXXV sports director Jevan McCoskey had the chance to speak with the Rebel’s men’s golf coach Chris Malloy on what makes Fallen Oaks golf course such a great fit for this tournament.
“They [athletes] drive out here form the hotel and they are like where are we going,” Malloy said. “Then everyone gets through these gates, gets out here on the first tee and every single person is blown away. Anyone who has been here knows that so that is why we look forward to welcoming these new teams and the teams that are coming back who are really excited. This is a championship golf course and, again as a coach, we are trying to prepare our guys to win an SEC championship – a national championship – this is the first step in that.”
Malloy, who has coached at Ole Miss for the last 10 years, says he is excited about where the tournament is now. But he is thrilled about where it can be taken in the years to come.
“Well I think that it is just going to get bigger and better,” Malloy said. “You saw from year one, now to year two, the field will continue to get stronger as people hear about it. Hear about the golf course, hear about the event itself. Then I think the things of helping out the Boys and Girls club here…that is important to all of us. We like to give back whenever we have an opportunity to do that. A lot of really special opportunities for the programs, the coaches, and the players.”
The Fallen Oak invitational will offer a family-friendly atmosphere as all are invited and encouraged to wear school colors and cheer on their team. The event is free and open to the public Saturday, Oct. 19th through Monday, Oct. 21st.
