28th Street Elementary in Gulfport surprises 4th and 5th graders

28th Street Elementary had many surprises and gifts for their fourth and fifth graders today.

‘Party like an MAAP star’ was a celebration for last year’s state test scores. The MAAP assessments caused the school to go from a Level C to now a Level B school.

Forty-eight students were recognized for their achievements in reading and math. The celebration started in the gymnasium with their parents and guest speakers.

Each student was rewarded with a certificate, trophy, and a t-shirt.

Afterward, the students paraded through the school, cheered on by their classmates, then treated to a pizza party, and finally the biggest surprise, a limo bus ride to Escape Arcade in Biloxi. Principal Robin Auringer said, “The hard work pays off. We take everything a day at a time and every little step matters and so our kids are proud. Our teachers are proud. I think the community is going to lift everyone up. Last year, we did the same thing and this year our group was larger. Students thrive on celebration and recognition. So, this was something we wanted to do for them and hopes to encourage students to continue being successful and push through the hard times.”

The principal will also head to the middle school soon to surprise students with some goodies for excelling on their test scores from last year.
