25th anniversary of gaming in Mississippi

Today marks the 25th anniversary when dockside gambling became legal along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
On this day in 1992, casinos began their journey to become the billion dollar industry we have today in South Mississippi. Many changes have happened over the 25 years, such as Katrina and new laws allowing gambling on land, but one thing has remained the same. Officials at casinos in the area say none of this would have been possible without the constant partnership between the regulators, gaming operators, and the legislators.
They say this will continue to be important for the future of gaming in Mississippi. Beau Rivage Regional Director of Communications Mary C. Spain said, “For the future of gaming, for the future of the Mississippi Gulf Coast being a viable gaming market, I think the attitude of openness by regulators and the desire to work with the operators and local and state governments to stay current on practices will keep Mississippi relevant and competitive in the gaming market.”
Since gaming began 25 years ago, an estimated $18 billion in revenue has been generated for the City of Biloxi and $118 million of that has gone to Biloxi public schools.
