Harrison County and Gulfport officials gathered this afternoon to celebrate the groundbreaking of North Park Estates in North Gulfport.
The $17 million project that has been in the works for nearly 12 years will feature 80 single family rental homes. Funding for the construction came, in part, through a grant awarded to Gulf Coast Housing Partnership by Peoples Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said at the ceremony the North Park Estates project is one of the city’s many projects that falls under the theme of urban renewal.
Harrison County District 4 Supervisor Kent Jones, who has been very active on the project, says North Park Estates is like a second home to him. “This is just a great thing and somewhat bittersweet here now because so many of my friends and relatives grew up in these projects. Back in the 70’s it was called Lawrence C Jones, but I’m a progressive type of person and I think building these single-family homes for the community is progressive thinking and it doesn’t get any better than that.”
Jones says he hopes families will be able to move in next year for the new school year.
