In an effort to become one of the best community colleges in the country, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has been busy building new facilities for its students and faculty.
College living just got a little better on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus. Students, faculty, and visitors can now enjoy meals and hang out at the newly unveiled 24,717 square foot student union and cafeteria. MGCCC President Dr. Mary Graham said, “Your community college is moving forward. We’re growing. We’re developing the leaders of the future and we can only do that with the state of the art facilities and this is an example of one of those.”
In addition to an expansive dining hall, the brand new building includes a banquet hall, lobby, and covered porch.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new student cafeteria and student union, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College moved on to its next project. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new multipurpose arena was also held on Wednesday.
The 28,500 square foot arena will feature a basketball court and the capacity to seat up to 1,540 fans as well as be the new headquarters for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. MGCCC Women’s Head Basketball Coach Hope Adams said, “Well we got a big freshman class that came in this year. So, the biggest thing about getting this recruiting class this year was we told them we were getting a new arena and that they would be able to open up in that arena the second half of their sophomore year.”
MGCCC Men’s Head Basketball Coach Tim Ryan said, “You know next year, is going to be an incredible year, I think, for the freshman kids coming in. Those guys are going to be able to be the last class in the old gym and the first class in the new gym.”
After years of planning, construction on the multipurpose arena is expected to be finished in early 2022.
