The FBI is continuing to investigate a shooting which wounded a federal law enforcement officer in Gautier this morning.
Local, state, and federal law enforcement were executing a state arrest warrant for kidnapping at the Siegel Select Extended Stay Hotel when shots were fired.
A Harrison County Sheriff’s deputy who is also a United States Marshal’s Service Task Force Officer was injured during the operation.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the officer was taken to Ocean Springs Hospital and treated for a gunshot wound to the neck and was later released.
The suspect in this incident has been identified as 31-year-old Joseph Dale Sonnier of Hancock County. Sonnier was taken into custody on state kidnapping charges while federal charges are pending.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says serving warrants in situations like these can be dangerous for officers, but he is glad they were ultimately able to detain the suspect. “You know we got the man in custody that we had the warrants for. The officer was injured, but he’s at home recovering tonight as we speak.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting while the FBI continues to investigate the assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
