With each passing Conference USA championship, the Southern Miss baseball program has the added responsibility of changing its tradition of excellence sign in left field to properly represent the correct number of titles, a minor inconvenience for the right to another regional dogpile.
The Golden Eagles are less than 24 hours away from taking the diamond at Pete Taylor Park for the first time in 2020 as Murray State comes to town for a three game series.
Around this time of year, Head Coach Scott Berry likes to use the motto ‘start fast’ and that motto has come to life with five consecutive season-opening home sweeps, beginning with Murray State in 2015.
Coach Berry also likes to say ‘finish strong,’ which has also come to life in the form of three C-USA Tournament crowns in the last four years.
As the pre-season favorites to win the league yet again, the Golden Eagles certainly have the respect of their peers thanks to that aforementioned tradition of excellence, even if they do have to go out and prove it all over again. Outfielder Gabe Montenegro said, “We do feel that and I feel like the program has earned that respect throughout the years, and we’re just going to go this year and then try to like keep doing what we do and try to win another conference.”
Second baseman Matthew Guidry said, “Preseason doesn’t mean anything. It would be great if that was the postseason result, or the end of the season results, but we’ve still got work to do. And come February 14th, that preseason poll isn’t going to really mean much.”
First pitch for tomorrow’s game one is set for 4 p.m. with Gabe Shepard taking the ball to lead off the new campaign.
Other games this weekend are #25 Ole Miss vs. #1 Louisville at 4 p.m. and #10 Mississippi State vs. Wright State at 1 p.m.
