You can’t stop the beat over at Gulfport High School this weekend.
Over 60 students are putting their singing, dancing, and acting skills to the test as they debut “Hairspray: the Musical” tonight.
This is the first time the school has held a show open to all members of the student body to audition and participate in.
The cast also received special video shout outs from people involved in the original Broadway production, making the experience an exciting time for everyone involved. Theatre Director Tonya Hays said, “The musical doesn’t just belong to the theatre department. It belongs to the entire school. So, we’ve got choir kids, band kids, auditions were open to anyone that wanted to try out.”
Actress Ava Suit said, “I have made so many new friends just from doing ‘Hairspray.’ It’s a bond that’s unbreakable.”
The show premiered tonight in the school’s Bishop Auditorium. Performances will run at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday as well as an understudy performance Saturday at noon. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
