Today is the first day of tax season.
The IRS will now begin accepting paper and electronic tax returns until April 15th. While you’re filing, the Harrison County Tax Assessor’s Office wants to remind you to update your homestead application if necessary.
Tax Assessor Paula Ladner says you may need to update if you’ve turned over 65-years-old, if you’ve become 100 percent disabled, if your spouse has died, or if you claim Mississippi as your legal residence among others. “Homestead exemption is not a given. It is a privilege to file homestead exemption. It does affect your tax amount. It is very important that people that are getting homestead exemption, if you’ve had a change, you must update because the state can come back and disallow your homestead credit and charge it back to your next year’s taxes.”
If you think you qualify for homestead exemption, head into the tax assessor’s office before the deadline of April 1st.
