MDOT releases holiday numbers: zero fatalities on New Year’s

It was a relatively safe New Year’s holiday for drivers on the Coast.

According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Troop K issued just over 330 tickets on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

While the holiday season is typically the most deadly time for drivers, MDOT only issued four DUI arrests and responded to just seven crashes, none of which included serious injury.

Troop K Public Affairs Officer Calvin Robertson tells News 25 that he hopes to see drivers on the Coast carry this safety into 2020. “2020, I mean, if we reduce traffic crashes and if we can save more lives, get more DUIs off the roadway, we’ll do that. We just want more people to pay attention to what they’re doing. There’s more cars on the road, there’s more congestion. You have left lane drivers who aren’t moving over who cause a lot of issues, also.”
