A group of special dogs were recognized over the weekend as they prepare to provide support in South Mississippi.
‘Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi’ held a graduation ceremony for this year’s group of therapy dogs. The dogs undergo extensive obedience and socialization training as part of the evaluation then go on to visit medical facilities and libraries for therapy sessions.
Group Coordinator Michael Bowin talked about the impact the dogs have on people. “You take a hospital visit, you know, of course the person doesn’t want to be there. They’re probably not feeling too terribly well and you walk through the door and generally there’s a little start ‘there’s a dog in the room’ and then the smile starts to break out.”
