Southern Miss righter fielder Matt Wallner broke a record of his own over the weekend.
USM’s junior right fielder now has 54 career home runs, more than any other player in school history. He came into the final regular season series against UAB at 50 and proceeded to homer in all three games, including two in the finale on Saturday.
Wallner surpasses the previous high mark of 53 set by Marc Maddox in 2006 and could still add to it during this week’s Conference USA Tournament.
Likely his final regular season with the Golden Eagles, Wallner ends the 2019 campaign as the Conference USA Hitter of the Week and one of seven national players of the week as recognized by collegiate baseball.
