Gaston Point Elementary School in Gulfport will officially be shutting its doors at the end of the school year.
The Gulfport School Board voted to close Gaston Point Elementary on Monday night. The school has struggled with the number of students who attended for the past decade, but it has become a bigger issue in recent years.
The savings from closing Gaston Point will go to a salary increase for teachers across the Gulfport School District. Gulfport School District Superintendent Glen East said, “We have to take care of the kids at the Gulfport School District. It is a fiscal reason first. It is also an important decision because there is some heart and emotion in the closing of an elementary school.”
All of the teachers and students from Gaston Point will be moving to a new elementary school in the district.
