The first ever Black Owned Business Awards Gala was held over the weekend in Gulfport.
The theme for the event was ‘Harlem Nights,’ based on the 1989 comedy starring Eddie Murphy. The gala highlighted African-American business owners and professionals from all over the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The awards gala was created out of the desire to recognize the many small black-owned businesses in the area who normally don’t get the recognition they deserve. “We were like ‘you know what, let’s have an award show to celebrate the black-owned businesses we have along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.’”
“It also gives exposure. It gives us more exposure to let them know that there are other black entrepreneurs out there along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”
