2016 Speckled Trout World Championship

Anglers from across the Gulf Coast had 10,000 reasons to be at Island View Casino this evening.
A meeting was held for captains participating in the 2016 Sparberry Schankin Memorial Speckled Trout World Championship Fishing Tournament. There’s a $10,000 first prize for anglers in the adult division and the added bonus of a new truck for any lucky angler that sets a new state record.
The contestants are itching to go fishing. John Rea with the 2016 World Speckled Trout Championship said, “The tournament has been extended because of the bad weather expected tomorrow. It’s been extended into Sunday. When you put $10,000 on the line a lot of people show up. That afternoon, we’ll have a bouncy house and we’ll have Clydesdale horses carrying kids around the harbor.”
Anglers will weigh their catches at the Jones Park Farmer’s Market in Gulfport. Scales will be open from 3 to 5 on Sunday. Closing ceremonies will take place around 6 p.m.
