20 years after Hurricane Katrina, this beloved restaurant is making a return
WAVELAND, Miss. (WXXV) – Before Hurricane Katrina devastated the town of Waveland in 2005, it was home to a thriving restaurant scene, and Rickey’s was at the heart of it. Chef Rickey Peters is bringing back the beloved restaurant, saying he couldn’t go anywhere without someone asking, “When are you coming back to Coleman Avenue?”
In partnership with Thomas Genin, owner of The Blind Tiger, Rickey’s is set to make its long-awaited return. Genin says he’s “thrilled to have the support of the city and all the loyal customers” who have missed Rickey’s over the years.
Waveland’s downtown, especially Coleman Avenue, was once a hub of energy, food, and community. The city’s new downtown development plan, outlined in the Waveland Renewal Plan, aims to restore that spirit with a focus on walkable spaces and renewed investment, making this the perfect moment for Rickey’s comeback.
Waveland Mayor Jay Trapani says he expects visitors from across the Coast to flock to the restaurant when it reopens. Rickey’s on Coleman is set to officially open its doors this summer, serving up both classic favorites and new creations, along with the unmistakable charm that made it a Gulf Coast staple.
