18-year-old arrested in weekend shooting in Lucedale

Shooting

LUCEDALE, Miss. (WXXV)- Lucedale police releasing new details today about a shooting over the weekend involving a handful of juveniles

Eighteen-year-old James Smith Jr. is now charged with three counts of aggravated assault, shooting into a motor vehicle, and simple assault on a minor.

Police say the shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of First State Bank on Old Highway 63.

A fight had apparently broken out between three juveniles and Smith earlier that day. Once the fight had ended, Smith took a gun and then shot at a car the juveniles were in.

No one was injured.

Smith was taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

Investigators have learned the fight and shooting stems from an ongoing conflict that started before school dismissed before the winter break.
