1,635 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Mississippi on Tuesday, shattering daily record

(WXXV) — The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported a record-breaking additional 1,635 cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi on Tuesday. The previous single-day record of new cases was 1,251, which was set yesterday, July 20.

In South Mississippi, the cases by county are as follows:

  • George —192 (13 new)
  • Hancock — 212 (8 new)
  • Harrison — 1,521 (65 new)
  • Jackson — 1,183 (68 new)
  • Pearl River — 383 (12 new)
  • Stone — 109 (5 new)

Today’s cases included 30 among residents in long-term care facilities, and 7 resident deaths. There are now 154 active outbreaks of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities (where an outbreak is one or more cases among residents or staff).

Rising hospitalizations continue to place unprecedented stress on the state’s medical care system. 943 Mississippians are currently hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infection, and 211 more with suspected COVID-19.

MSDH’s latest estimate of COVID-19 recoveries is 30,315 statewide since cases began in Mississippi.

In a post to social media, the Mississippi State Department of Health said Monday afternoon, “Our COVID-19 case rate responds quickly when precautions are taken. We have seen a dramatic increase, but we can expect a sharp fall in cases if we simply take protective steps. Staying home more often, keeping a sensible distance from others, and using a mask have worked for us before, and they can work again.”
