10U underclassmen baseball team ring bells for charity

The 10U underclassmen baseball team made a special appearance at Rouses in Gulfport this weekend, ringing Salvation Army bells to raise money for the organization.

The group came to town from D’Iberville to spread some Christmas cheer with carols and collections. This is the group’s fourth year ringing for the Salvation Army.

When they’re not raising money, the traveling ball team plays in tournaments in nearby states like Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida.

Coach Ricky Hasty says projects like this teach the boys that there’s more to life than baseball. “Well, the Underclassmen, yes we want to teach them baseball, but we want to teach them how to be respectable young men that are not only learning baseball but they’re learning life lessons. Yeah, we want to go out and do our best, but we want them to be their best while they’re learning to be their best. You know, teaching them how to be young men, and not just boys, trying to groom them to show what it takes — you know it’s not always about presents at Christmas for themselves, it’s about giving back to the community.”

The 10U underclassmen will be having more tryouts in the spring.
