100th Anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize Award
USM’s Gulf Park campus commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer Award by hosting several prize winners for a panel discussion.
The panel featured former editor of the Sun Herald Stan Tiner, Gulfport native Natasha Tretheway and journalism professor and former editor Charlie Mitchell. The free program was titled “The Pulitzer Prize in Mississippi: Responding to Natural Disasters.”
The three panelists touched on the journalistic and literary values the prizes represent. Interim Associate Provost for USM Gulf Park Casey Maugh Funderburk said, “What they’re discussing tonight are the stories that have to deal with the Pulitzer Prize and the stories that go along with the winning of the Pulitzer Prize and so really any community member would be probably fascinated to hear all of the tales of how that happens, what occurs to get a Pulitzer Prize and sort of the national recognition of such a prize.”
Attendees were able to ask the panel follow-up questions during a reception following the program.
