10,000 pounds of crawfish boiled at the 16th annual Crawfish Cookoff in Waveland

Perfect weather and crawfish make for a great day and in Waveland, they were carrying on their iconic Crawfish Cookoff.

This was the 16th year that the people of Waveland have joined together for the cookoff and upwards of 10,000 pounds of crawfish were boiled.

Attendees enjoyed live music from the Barstool Cowboys Band and cookoff contestants competed in categories for the best dish, most unique item in the boil, and top team.

Eventgoers and cooks shared their opinions on how they like their crawfish served. One Ukrainian descendent family shares the difference in crawfish in their culture compared to South Mississippi. Lana and Arianna Comfort said, “It’s not Cajun. It’s not spicy. We do boil them in beer. We add some salt, pepper, and a lot of dill. It’s totally different. It’s not like the typical Old Bay crab oil, lemon, orange, all that, it’s not that.”

Crawfish cook John Stein said, “The real key thing is letting them soak. You know, a lot of time people don’t let them soak long enough to pull in the spices.”

Attendee Vicky Meshell said, “I look for the hot spicy, red as they can be.”

The Crawfish Cookoff benefits the Hancock Resource Center. If you are interested in attending next year’s cookoff or any events in Waveland visit hancockchamber.org.
