MOSS POINT, Miss. (WXXV) — One person is dead in Jackson County as a result of severe weather on Wednesday night, according to Public Safety Director Earl Etheridge.

Etheridge tells WXXV that at about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, a tornado flipped a woman’s vehicle several times on Highway 63 in Moss Point, just south of the Escatawpa River Bridge. She later died from her injuries.

At least one home was also damaged in the storm.

Etheridge says teams with Jackson County Emergency Management are currently surveying damage to help determine the severity of the reported tornado. He says they will be working in conjunction with the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service said Thursday morning they will be sending two teams from their weather forecast office in Slidell, Louisiana to conduct storm surveys.

One team will be surveying reported damage in Jackson County near the Pascagoula and Moss Point areas.

Another team will be surveying storm damage in Pearl River County near Picayune, MS. A tornado was reported by first responders at around 7 p.m. and produced damage to homes and roadways in the area.

Photos posted by the Picayune Police Department showed a semi-truck overturned in the storms, along with multiple trees and powerlines down.

The NWS says more information about the tornadoes will be available later today.
