Hancock County School District names new superintendent

Over the weekend, the Hancock County School Board announced the selection of the district’s next superintendent.

The board has appointed Theresa Merwin to lead the district beginning July 1st, replacing retiring Superintendent Alan Dedeaux.

Merwin returns to the district after serving the past four years as the principal of Thames Elementary School in Hattiesburg.

Before that she had stints as a teacher at Hancock High School and Hancock County Career Technical Center, and served as an assistant principal at Hancock North Central Elementary and West Hancock Elementary.

In announcing her hiring, the district pointed to how under her leadership at Thames Elementary, she received several awards including the MS Association of Partners in Education Governor’s Award in 2020 and 2021.
