Avenue of Flags Ceremony at Veterans Tribute Tower in Gautier
Memorial Day commemorations were in full display today over in Jackson County including in Gautier.
Community members and local leaders gathered in front of the Veterans Tribute Tower by City Hall for Gautier’s Avenue of Flags Ceremony.
Hosted by the American Legion Post 1992, the event featured a wreath presentation and tolling of the bell, as well as remarks by guest speaker Commander Chad Stewart of the under-construction Navy vessel, the PCU Frank E. Petersen Jr.
American Legion 9th District Commander Bill Whatley says there are important meanings behind each of the flags displayed in front of the tower and along Highway 90. “The Avenue of Flags, that’s from our soldiers and sailors that have gone on, and their families have dedicated these flags for them to fly on Memorial Day to remember them. So, every year at this time, we fly those flags in remembrance of them.”
A ceremonial flag raising was also held to start the event. This was the seventh annual edition of this ceremony for the City of Gautier.
