GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — The Gulfport Fire Department announced Tuesday that former Fire Chief James White passed away earlier this week.
Chief White began his career with the Gulfport Fire Department in 1965 and worked his way up to becoming the Fire Chief in 1984.
After decades of service, he retired in 1990, but came out of retirement to serve as Gulfport’s Fire Chief for three more years from 1998 through 2001.
The City of Gulfport said in a statement Thursday, “Chief James White was a great leader guiding the department into emergency medical service delivery and served the City of Gulfport with honor and distinction. He loved the department, his wife Jeannie, and his family. Chief White was a gentleman and great leader. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Funeral services for will take place Thursday, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, it will be a private ceremony for family only.
There will be a funeral procession Highway 90 at around 2 p.m. from Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Homes in downtown Gulfport to Biloxi National Cemetery.
