The Mississippi Highway Patrol has wrapped up its holiday travel enforcement period.
MHP conducted safety checkpoints to combat speeding and reckless and distracted driving as well as enforcing child restraint and seat-belt laws.
In South Mississippi, MHP reported the following:
- 630 citations
- 5 DUI arrests
- 1 fatality (Hancock County)
Throughout the state of Mississippi, MHP wrote more than 5,900 tickets over the holiday period.
A total of 115 people were arrested for DUI.
There were 246 accidents across the state investigated by state troopers.
In addition to a death in Hancock County, fatal crashes were also reported in Marion, Lauderdale, and Covington Counties.
Last year, the highway patrol investigated 185 crashes and 10 fatalities and made 95 DUI arrests over the Thanksgiving holiday in the state.
MHP says there was heavy traffic on state highways and troopers anticipate more as we approach Christmas.
