For a team coming off a trip to Super Bowl 54, the San Francisco 49ers better have a good back up plan at quarterback and as a matter of fact they do in the form of Southern Miss alum Nick Mullens.
Head Coach Kyle Shanahan says Mullens is likely to start in week three against the New York Giants in place of the injured Jimmy Garappolo.
It’ll be Mullen’s first start since 2018 when he torched the Oakland Raiders for three touchdown passes in his debut, his first of eight starts in place of Jimmy G.
Mullens went 8-11 for 71 yards last week, setting the stage for USM’s all-time leading passer to show everyone why. San Francisco 49ers Tight End George Kittle said, “Same old Nick that I saw in 2018. He’s locked in. He’s got the game plan down. He’s got a rocket for an arm. He’s slinging it. He’s confident. I know he’s just excited to get the opportunity to play. If he gets to play, I know he’s going to take advantage of that situation because that dude loves football and he’s going to give it his all. So I mean we’re definitely in good hands if Jimmy can’t go, and I don’t know if he’s going to play or not, but if Nick gets the green light then I know he’s going to rip it and I can’t wait to watch it.”
Mullens is 3-5 as a starter for San Fran with 13 touchdowns and 10 picks in 2018.
