Singing River Health System’s Ocean Springs Hospital is now one of only 604 certified baby-friendly hospitals and birth centers in the USA.
They had a celebration early Wednesday morning honoring their new designation.
They are now joining a growing number of 20,000 hospitals in the world that are also certified baby friendly.
This means they are adhering to the highest standards for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Chief Nursing Officer Susan Russell said, “This means to the community that they get the highest level of care from a hospital that’s dedicated to the well-being and health of moms and babies that are delivered here. That is just a huge undertaking and means improved health for Mississippi and the citizens going forward.”
Singing River Health System CEO Lee Bond said, “I thought everybody was baby friendly but apparently there’s different levels of baby friendly. There’s C and D levels and there’s A level and that is what they have here. There are a lot of boxes you have to check to make sure you meet the designation that you’ve gone the extra mile.”
The designation was a four year long journey for the hospital. All of their staff had to go through rigorous education and training to fulfill the requirements.
