NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s death toll from Hurricane Laura has risen to 26. Gov. John Bel Edwards announced the latest death attributed to the Aug. 27 hurricane at a news conference Tuesday.
The health department and the state fire marshal say the victim was a 49-year-old man in Calcasieu Parish who died of smoke inhalation and burns in a fire.
That fire is believed to have been ignited by a candle or lantern being used because of widespread lingering power outages in the wake of the storm.
The man died Sunday. Edwards said more than 137,000 power customers were still without power Tuesday – mostly in southwest Louisiana.
