Ship Island opens after repairs to pier

Gulf Islands National Seashore announced today that Ship Island is officially reopened after being closed since June 5th due to Tropical Storm Cristobal.

During the storm, the island’s ferry pier was damaged, causing all ferry service to Ship Island to be halted.

Starting Thursday, July 15th, Ship Island Excursions will resume its regular ferry schedule.

In order to keep passengers and crew safe, Ship Island Excursions is asking all guests to bring masks and wear them whenever it is not possible to social distance while on the boat.

All boats will only be filled to 50 percent capacity. On the island, all umbrellas and chairs are spaced at least six feet apart.

Captain Louis Skremetta of Ship Island Excursions checked out the fixed pier yesterday. “I was out there yesterday with the construction crew. They finished up the job and the Park Service inspected the work and gave us the green light to operate. So I was out there yesterday. The temporary repairs are fine. It’s a four-foot wide boardwalk going across the missing section of pier and it is fine. It’s wheelchair accessible. It looked great except from having to move some sand off of the dock and a few other things.”

Ferries will operate seven days a week and depart Jones Park at 9 a.m. and noon until mid-August.
