The Fourth of July has come and gone, but some trash left on the beach still remains.

Crews from Harrison County are busy cleaning up our beaches after this holiday weekend. Cleanup crews started on 20th Avenue in Gulfport and will work their way to Biloxi. They also have some crews cleaning up in Pass Christian.

Officials say the beaches should be completely cleaned up by the end of this week.

A little less trash was left on the beach than normal thanks to 100 additional trash cans placed around the beach. Harrison County Sand Beach Department Director Chuck Loftis said, “We just put them out within the last two weeks because we have been having such an influx of people on the beach during the weekends. The trash cans that we had were overflowing pretty quickly. So, we added some more. So, we had roughly about 500 drums out on the 26 miles of beach.”

Officials are still asking that groups no larger than 20 congregate on the beach at once and to remember to practice social distancing.
