The C-USA Tournament won’t be out of the Magnolia State for very long with Southern Miss Athletics later announcing Pete Taylor Park as the host site for 2022.
The baseball champions were last played in Hattiesburg in 2016, capping off a three-year run at USM with a dramatic 3-2 win over Rice on Championship Sunday and a regional dogpile at the pitcher’s mound.
Overall, Southern Miss has hosted the event a league high six times, the other years being 1996, 2005, 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
Here’s Head Coach Scott Berry on the change of scenery and perhaps some more magic at the Pete. “Well, I don’t think anybody does it as good as we do at Southern Miss and even in Biloxi when it’s in the state of Mississippi. We’ve talked many times about how people embrace baseball from the little league level on up to the collegiate level and it shows especially when it gets to tournament time and all the college levels in Mississippi. We’ll be glad to have it back in ’22. That’ll certainly give us a couple of years to prepare for that, and our people have always responded and put on the best tournament of anybody that’s ever done it since I’ve been associated with Conference USA in 20 years.”
Coach Berry says three schools and three independent sites made bids on hosting the C-USA Tournament. Rice will do the honors in 2023.
