Staying safe around water

According to the CDC, drowning is responsible for more deaths among children age one through four than any other cause except birth defects.

Here in the United States, drowning causes around 10 deaths per day.

With the summer months quickly approaching, it is important to be aware around the water.

At the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA in Ocean Springs, one of their main goals is to make sure people of all ages are safe around the water. They teach swimming classes to babies all the way up to adults.

One of the main points the YMCA tries to get across to their students is to ask permission before they get into the water and always swim with a buddy. YMCA Swim Instructor Marie Mullen said, “Drowning is the silent killer. It only takes 30 seconds for a child to drown. It can be so scary because there is no screaming, no gasping. It happens so quickly.”

If children are in the water make sure there is an adult paying attention to the kids.
