Back to Ball: West Harrison alum Ameshya Williams dominating at JSU

If you haven’t heard the name Ameshya Williams in a while, it’s a long story.

But it’s a long story worth telling about a former West Harrison basketball star that’s come a long way from her days as a Lady Hurricane.

Prior to this season, the last time we saw Williams on the basketball court was November 2017, one game into her sophomore year at Mississippi State.

But that was the last game she ever played with the Lady Bulldogs, promptly withdrawing from the university due to personal matters.

Eventually, Williams agreed to play for Head Coach Tomekia Reed at Jackson State before learning she was pregnant. Williams then gave birth to her son, Jace, in December 2018 and returned to the court the following June.

That’s where we find Williams now, fourth on the Lady Tigers in scoring at more than 10 points per game while also leading the team in rebounds, blocks, and life experience. Coach Reed said, “I texted her every day. Every day I text her and finally she responded to my text message and from there it was history.”

Williams said, “I would be proud of myself because I don’t want my child to have the life I had. I want him to have a better life than me. I want him to have to do nothing that he’s not supposed to do. I think he would be very proud that he has a mother that’s playing professional ball, a mother that went back and did something to better the life of his and mine.”
