Today is the American Heart Association’s ‘Go Red for Women Day.’
The day is designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.
Here in Mississippi, raising awareness about heart health is especially important. Chief of Cardiology M. Zayed said, “It is very important especially down here in Mississippi because unfortunately we rank the highest in the country with regards to mortality rates from heart disease in both men and women. So, it is very important to increase that awareness in heart disease in women particularly because a lot of the symptoms could be different than the classic symptoms.”
Dr. Zayed says people in Mississippi are at a high risk of heart disease due to a number of reasons such as smoking, poor diets, and a lack of exercise.
