Today is a welcome home for certain veterans on the Coast.
Starting today, military veterans with a zero to 100 percent service related disability have more access to their perspective bases as part of the DOD Veterans Expanded Access Program.
This will give them access to commissary and exchange as well as community events and recreation services happening on base.
News 25 visited the Seabee Base in Gulfport where they say they are excited for this new opportunity to welcome these men and women back into the naval community. Brian Lamar with NCBC Public Affairs said, “It will add to the community we have because we have a lot of veterans out in the community that are part of the military community on the Coast, but can’t have access to the base. So, this now brings them back in and we get to honor their commitment to the country.”
These new inclusive rules were laid out in the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018.
